Ancient Egypt : An Extract

Ancient Egypt

This book is well known and makes a good resource for a Key Stage 2 optional study on the ancient world. It is a fascinating subject and the book is very far ranging as an introduction to the subject.

The many drawings include: Agricultural implements, Egyptian numbers, Bow-Drill, Crook & Flail, Pyramid, Royal Tomb, Sledge, Tutankhamen's Tomb, Temple Plan, temple Pylon, Farmhouse, Furniture, Senet Board, Canal & Dyke, Making Papyrus, Reed Pens, Measurements, Weapons, Foot Soldier and War Galley.

From Chapter 2 Farming
To lift water from the River Nile to the level of their irrigation ditches the Egyptians used a shaduf. You can see a picture of one of these simple machines opposite.

From Chapter 3 Writing
The Egyptian word for hand, for example began with the sound "D" and so this sign (hand shown)was the Egyptian letter. Leg in Ancient Egyptian began with the sound "B" and so the letter "B" was written like this (picture of leg shown)

From Chapter 5 The Pharaoh
Pharaohs wore many different crowns at their coronations. one of these was the combined crown of Upper and Lower Egypt which you can see in the picture opposite. This crown was made by joining the tall white stiffened linen crown of Upper Egypt with the red crown of Lower Egypt.

From Chapter 6 Monuments
The Pharaoh himself was buried in a chamber deep inside the pyramid and a maze of passages left off this room. These often lead to dead ends.
